Canon Point: Chapter 258
About: Hoooo boy. Hakuryuu is fucked UP. When he was a tiny, almost his entire family was killed in a fiery revolt. Hakuryuu was saved by his brother who soaked him in his own blood to protect Hakuryuu from the fire after telling Hakuryuu to exact revenge on the perpetrator of the revolt—Hakuryuu’s own mother—with his DYING BREATH. In disbelief, Hakuryuu asked his mother if the revolt was really her fault, and she pretty much just laughed in his face. Wanting to protect his only remaining sibling, his older sister Hakuei, Hakuryuu, opted to keep this information to himself while he bided his time for vengeance. Needless to say all this left an impression.
Hakuryuu grew into a studious, serious young man with a pathological independent streak a mile wide severely, compromised by a shaky foundation of neediness and a pervasive sense of his own powerlessness. He was raised to be self-sufficient by his sister and this was compounded in a bad way by the conviction the responsibility for taking vengeance on his mother was his alone. On his very first group dungeon adventure he tells his shounen companions to stop picking up his slack, that he would rather die than gain the power of the dungeon by relying on anything but his own power. They shounen top him into accepting their help but their work is almost immediately undone during an incident shortly thereafter. Having been mildly brainwashed into thinking the villain of the week character was his mother, Hakuryuu brutally executes her in front of her other brainwashed children. His traveling companions are horrified and Hakuryuu concludes that he cannot rely on them to help him extract his vengeance.
At his core, Hakuryuu is angry. He’s angry at his mother and he’s angry at his siblings whom he feels have gone along with their mother’s evil schemes. He has grown up isolated with the burden of revenge driving all his actions, in an environment where violence and strength seemed to be the only means of getting one’s way. When he first joins up with the party he makes an honest effort to understand them but he struggles to empathize with party member Alibaba, the prince of a country who had had his country overtaken. Hakuryuu saw Alibaba as irresponsible and he could not understand how Alibaba could set aside his anger for what had been done to his country. In fact, Hakuryuu knows why his siblings refused to fight his mother—they did so to avoid tearing the country apart and causing war. Even knowing this Hakuryuu can’t forgive them and he can’t let go of his anger. He holds it so intensely that he “Falls into Depravity” which essentially means he rejects his destiny and falls into a state of deep pessimism about the future.
Hakuryuu becomes viciously ruthless, committing disturbing atrocities such as brainwashing his own people and stirring up war. He betrays everything his father stood for, purposefully tearing his own country apart because he has stopped believing in many method besides violence. He does manage to kill his mother but even then he keeps going, swearing to kill his older stepbrother, but goals themselves seem to stop mattering much and become simply further excuse to lash out.
Hakuryuu started the series as a distant but polite young man, eager to prove his own competency and tentatively excited by the prospect of making allies to help him in his goal. Leading up to and after falling into depravity he becomes sullen, obsessed with pushing his abilities but in some ways also more relaxed—more freely sarcastic, less concerned with other people’s opinions.
